Part-time Job

Student visa status allows its holders to engage in research and study during their residency. If international students wish to work part-time to earn money, they must apply for “Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted” at an immigration office. It is prohibited to work and earn money without this permission, and violators may be penalized.

Japanese immigration law limits how many hours international students may work per week.

28 hours a week (8 hours a day during the summer, winter, and spring vacations)

To apply for the permission, please submit the following documents to the International Affairs Division at least 1 week before you start working. The form 1 and 2 are available at the International Affairs Division.

  1. APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN AN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED BY THE STATUS OF RESIDIENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED
  2. 申請取次?資格外活動調査票 (Form to report the above application)
  3. Residence Card

After the above documents are checked and processed by the International Affairs Division, the applicant has to go to the immigration office to obtain the permission. At that time, the applicant also needs to hand in other supporting documents; the International Affairs Division will tell the applicant what to submit.
